Dr David Cooper began his time as superintendent in 1842. He was regarded as rather eccentric. Besides his work at the asylum, he also sold a patent medicine, which he advertised as a miracle cure and attempted to set up a journal of insanity. His first report for the asylum was a strange product, written in a highly baroque style, and which was met with incredulity when it was received by the American Journal of Insanity. In 1845 he was dismissed as the head of the asylum and replaced by Dr. Thomas F. Green. He died in 1854 in Georgia.
